Union Budget 2026 allocates a record Rs 2.78 lakh crore to Indian Railways, boosting high-speed corridors, freight efficiency, safety, and sustainability—driving India’s vision of a developed nation.

In an unprecedented move, the Union Budget 2026 has allocated Rs 2.78 lakh crore—the highest ever funding for the railway sector—to transform rail connectivity, enhance freight efficiency, and prioritise passenger safety. This bold initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India), aiming to modernise one of the country’s most vital infrastructure pillars. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the budget’s focus during a press conference at Rail Bhawan. He described the funding as a historic step that will accelerate modernisation, safety upgrades, and passenger amenities. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Vaishnaw expressed gratitude to PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for their vision and support. Transformative High-Speed Rail Corridors A standout feature of the budget is the announcement of seven new high-speed rail corridors spanning nearly 4,000 kilometers, with an expected investment of Rs 16 lakh crore. These corridors will drastically cut travel times between key cities, facilitating economic integration and regional development. The routes include: Mumbai to Pune (~48 minutes) Pune to Hyderabad (~1 hour 55 minutes) Hyderabad to Bengaluru (~2 hours) Hyderabad to Chennai (~2 hours 55 minutes) Chennai to Bengaluru (~1 hour 13 minutes) Delhi to Varanasi (~3 hours 50 minutes) Varanasi to Siliguri (~2 hours 55 minutes) In South India, the Chennai-Bengaluru-Hyderabad network will form the “South High-Speed Diamond,” benefiting states like Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry. Vaishnaw called it a “big boon” for regional growth, especially for IT and economic hubs. Northern and eastern corridors, such as Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri, will create new economic belts across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, promoting seamless multimodal transport and sustainability. Dedicated Freight Corridor to Boost East-West Trade The budget also proposes a 2,052 km Dedicated Freight Corridor from Dankuni (West Bengal) to Surat (Gujarat), passing through Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. This corridor will integrate with the existing Western DFC to streamline goods movement to western ports. Vaishnaw noted that the Eastern and Western DFCs are currently near saturation with 400 freight trains daily, making the new corridor critical to easing congestion, supporting industrial growth, and reducing logistics costs. Safety and Technological Advances Safety remains a priority, with Rs 1.20 lakh crore allocated for advanced track maintenance, rapid deployment of the Kavach automatic train protection system, CCTV installations, overhead electrical upgrades, and station redevelopment. Investments have already reduced railway accidents by 95%. Indian Railways is also exporting indigenous propulsion systems to countries like the USA, Germany, and Spain, reflecting India’s growing technological self-reliance. Sustainability and Infrastructure Growth Rail transport’s environmental benefits—being 95% less polluting than road transport—are emphasized as crucial to India’s sustainability goals. Infrastructure milestones include 35,000 km of new tracks and electrification of over 99.5% of broad-gauge lines. Accelerated production of Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat trains will further modernise the passenger experience. This landmark budget reinforces Indian Railways as the backbone of India’s development, promising faster connectivity, efficient logistics, enhanced safety, and resilient infrastructure, propelling the nation closer to its goal of becoming a developed country by 2047.
