India’s first private railway station, Rani Kamalapati Railway Station in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, stands as a landmark in public-private collaboration. Formerly known as Habibganj Railway Station, it was the first in the country to be redeveloped and operated under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The redevelopment project was undertaken by the Bansal Group in collaboration with the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation (IRSDC). It marked a significant shift in infrastructure development by inviting private investment into railway station modernization.
The station was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 15, 2021, and was renamed in honor of Gond queen Rani Kamalapati, a symbol of courage and good governance. Following the renaming, the station code changed from HBJ to RKMP.
Rani Kamalapati station boasts world-class passenger amenities, including airport-like waiting lounges, modern food courts, energy-efficient systems, and enhanced safety features. The station is also designed to be eco-friendly and sustainable, incorporating green building concepts and renewable energy usage.
This redevelopment is part of Indian Railways’ broader vision to transform major stations into modern transport hubs, attracting private investment and improving the passenger experience. The PPP model has not only reduced the financial burden on the government but also brought in private sector efficiency and innovation.
With Rani Kamalapati Railway Station setting the precedent, Indian Railways plans to modernize more stations across the country using the PPP approach.
