With the aim of strengthening train protection and railway safety infrastructure, Indian Railways has approved the installation of ‘Kavach Version 4.0’ across 614.75 route kilometers in the Varanasi Division of the North Eastern Railway. The total estimated cost for this project is ₹223 crore.
This project will cover the remaining identified sections of the Varanasi Division and expand the reach of the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. Its implementation is expected to strengthen the train safety mechanism and facilitate safer, more reliable train operations across the entire division.
Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system developed in India, aimed at enhancing the safety of rail operations. It helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) incidents and can automatically apply the train’s brakes when necessary. Additionally, it continuously monitors train operations, thereby facilitating safe and reliable rail services.
This approval marks another step in Indian Railways’ initiative to implement the indigenous ‘Kavach’ technology across its network on a large scale and strengthen train safety systems for safe and reliable rail operations.
