Indian Railways has approved a project worth ₹432 crore to replace relay-based interlocking with Electronic Interlocking (EI) at 27 stations/cabins (including one IBS location) on the High-Density Network (HDN) and Highly Utilized Network (HUN) routes of Eastern Railway’s Asansol Division.
The approved work involves replacing 28 relay-based interlocking systems (27 PI/RRI and 1 IBS) with state-of-the-art electronic interlocking systems, which will significantly enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of train operations.
The project is part of the ongoing programme of providing electronic interlocking on HDN/HUN routes of Indian Railways, where advanced signalling systems like armor, Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) and Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) are being implemented.
Electronic interlocking is a modern signaling technology that replaces traditional relay-based systems with computer-based interlocking. It offers a more reliable system, faster fault detection, easier maintenance, and enhanced operational flexibility. This project will further strengthen railway safety while facilitating increased line capacity and more efficient train operations on one of the network’s busiest sections. (PIB)
