Indian Railways has approved a ₹175 crore plan to enhance locomotive maintenance infrastructure by creating additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the HHP Diesel Shed in Raipur, under the South East Central Railway (SECR).
‘Homing’ refers to the assignment of a locomotive to a designated locomotive shed, which serves as the primary hub for its maintenance. The homing shed is responsible for the locomotive’s scheduled maintenance, safety inspections, repairs, and overall care to ensure its safe and proper operation.
This project has been approved as part of efforts to upgrade Indian Railways’ maintenance infrastructure, in view of the rapid expansion of the electric locomotive fleet and the growth in freight and passenger services across the network.
The additional homing facilities will enable Indian Railways to make better use of existing infrastructure while also creating the necessary space for future technological expansion at the Raipur depot.
