Indian Railways Clears 140 Crore Kavach Installation Project in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad Division

Date:

In a significant move to enhance rail safety, Indian Railways has approved the installation of ‘Kavach Version 4.0’ across 48 block sections and 598 route kilometers within the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway in Gujarat. The project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹140 crore. This initiative has been approved under the umbrella program designed to implement ‘Kavach’—supported by an LTE-based communication backbone—across the rest of the Indian Railways network.

Earlier, the installation of ‘Kavach’ on approximately 702 route kilometers of the Ahmedabad Division had already been approved. With the approval of the current project, ‘Kavach’ will also be installed in the remaining sections of the division, paving the way for the large-scale implementation of the indigenous train protection system across the entire division.

‘Kavach’ is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to enhance operational safety. It helps prevent ‘Signal Passing at Danger’ (SPAD), automatically applies brakes when necessary to avoid unsafe situations, controls train speed under challenging conditions, and significantly reduces the risk of train collisions.

As part of its continuous efforts to strengthen safety and modernize train operations, Indian Railways is gradually expanding ‘Kavach’ across its network. (PIB)
