Indian railways is divided into 18 zones, headed by general managers who report to the railway board. The zones are further subdivided into 68 operating divisions, headed by divisional railway managers (drm).There are currently 71 divisions on the system nationwide. The divisions are primarily involved with train running but may also have locomotive sheds (repair shops for locomotives), coaching depots (repair home bases for passenger trains), and wagon depots (repair and maintenance points for freight stock). Each division has all the functional organisations (both line and staff). The divisional officers of the engineering, mechanical, electrical, signal and telecommunication, stores, accounts, personnel, operating, commercial, security and safety branches report to their respective drms and are tasked with the operation and maintenance of assets.
