Railways Approves Increase in Train Speed Limit to 100 kmph on Katra-Banihal Section

Date:

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Railways approved a plan to increase the maximum train speed to 100 kmph on the new 111-km-long broad-gauge section connecting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Banihal, which falls under the Northern Railway’s Jammu Division.

Previously, the speed limits for this section were set at 85 kmph for the Katra-Sangaldan stretch and 75 kmph for the Sangaldan-Banihal stretch. The Railways took this decision only after ensuring full compliance with all stipulated safety conditions.

Reduced Travel Time and Strengthened Connectivity

Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Jammu), stated that the increased speed would not only reduce travel time but also further strengthen connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir. Passengers will experience faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys. This move is also expected to boost tourism, trade, and economic activities in the region. Singhal remarked, “The Railways remains steadfastly committed to passenger safety and convenience. The increased speed will improve the region’s overall connectivity.”

Launch of New Rail Facility in Madhya Pradesh

Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, virtually inaugurated the gauge-converted Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur rail section in Madhya Pradesh. He also flagged off the extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service up to Birpur.

This extension will provide the Birpur, Vijaypur, and Sabalgarh areas with direct rail connectivity to Gwalior. Residents of rural and tribal areas will gain access to an affordable and convenient travel option. In addition to improving access to education, healthcare services, and employment opportunities, this initiative will also provide a boost to local trade and economic activities.
