Indian Railways has approved a 175-crore project in Raipur to strengthen its locomotive maintenance infrastructure. Under this initiative, additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives will be developed at the South East Central Railway’s (SECR) High Horse Power Diesel Shed in Raipur.
“Homing” refers to assigning a locomotive to a specific shed that serves as its primary maintenance hub. This shed handles routine checks, repairs, safety inspections, and maintenance to ensure the locomotive operates safely and efficiently.
According to the Railways, this project was sanctioned to enhance maintenance capacity in response to the rapidly growing number of electric locomotives and the expansion of freight and passenger services.
The new facilities will enable better utilization of existing resources at the Raipur depot and help meet future requirements arising from new technologies and an expanding locomotive fleet.
The Railways states that this move will prove significant in strengthening the electric locomotive network, boosting operational efficiency, and ensuring safe rail services.
