In a major move to enhance railway capacity in India’s coal-rich regions, Indian Railways has approved the Champa-Korba third line project (42 km) of the South East Central Railway (SECR) at an estimated cost of ₹755 crore.
The project involves construction of a third railway line between Champa and Korba, excluding the already sanctioned Madwarani-Saragbundia section. The corridor has been identified under Indian Railways’ Mission 3000 MT and High-Density Network (HDN) Corridor initiatives aimed at strengthening freight movement and supporting the country’s growing energy requirements.
Korba, known as the “Power Capital of India,” is home to several thermal power plants and serves as one of the country’s most important coal transport hubs. The Champa-Korba section is a vital rail link connecting the coal mines of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) to the national rail network and the Mumbai-Howrah high-density corridor.
Currently, approximately 10 pairs of passenger trains and around 55 pairs of freight trains operate on this section. The total coal production capacity of SECL and MCL in this region is approximately 247 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This is projected to rise to around 450 MTPA, resulting in an increase of approximately 200 MTPA in coal transportation in the coming years.
The third-line project will accelerate the movement of both freight and passenger trains, while also enhancing capacity and providing greater operational flexibility.
Upon completion, the project will facilitate the operation of two additional passenger trains daily in each direction and enable the transportation of an extra 5.95 MTPA of freight. It is also projected to generate an additional annual net revenue of approximately ₹85 crore, comprising ₹82 crore from freight transport and ₹3 crore from coaching services.
The third line will also reduce the stoppage time for freight trains—which currently face delays of approximately five minutes at various points—resulting in estimated annual operational savings of ₹1.30 crore.
The Champa-Korba Third Line project marks another significant step in Indian Railways’ efforts to enhance network capacity, improve freight efficiency and passenger services, and support the nation’s infrastructure and energy development goals. (PIB)
