Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi to review and accelerate major railway infrastructure projects across Assam, with a focus on strengthening connectivity, modernising stations, and improving passenger amenities.
During the meeting, both leaders discussed the ongoing expansion of more than 1,300 kilometres of railway tracks in Assam and the redevelopment of over 50 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The projects are aimed at enhancing transport infrastructure, improving regional connectivity, and supporting economic growth across Assam and the Northeast.
According to officials, the railway expansion plan is expected to improve passenger convenience, strengthen freight movement, and provide better access to remote areas. The redevelopment of stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme will include upgraded passenger facilities, improved accessibility, and modern infrastructure.
The discussions also highlighted the Centre’s continued emphasis on infrastructure development in the Northeast, where railway connectivity has emerged as a key driver of economic integration, tourism growth, and industrial development.
Over the past few years, Indian Railways has significantly increased investment in the region through new railway lines, electrification projects, station modernisation, and enhanced train services. Recent initiatives include new rail connectivity projects linking Assam with neighbouring northeastern states and the launch of new long-distance train services to improve regional mobility.
Officials believe the ongoing railway projects will play a crucial role in reducing travel time, improving logistics, boosting trade, and integrating Assam more closely with the national transportation network. The meeting reflects the joint commitment of the Centre and the Assam government to transform railway infrastructure into a catalyst for long-term economic growth in the Northeast.
