Kolhapur–Miraj Rail Line Completes 135 Years, Demand Grows for Karad–Kolhapur–Belagavi New Railway Route

A key demand raised during the event was the construction of a new Karad–Kolhapur–Belagavi railway line

Kolhapur: The 135th anniversary of the historic Kolhapur–Miraj railway line was commemorated at Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus, with stakeholders using the occasion to push for new rail connectivity projects in the region.

The event, organised by passenger associations, highlighted the legacy of the rail line, which was originally extended to Kolhapur under the vision of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj despite geographical challenges.

Speakers at the program emphasised that while the line has played a crucial role in connecting Kolhapur to major routes via Miraj Junction, further upgrades are needed to meet growing transport demands.

Demand for New Rail Route

A key demand raised during the event was the construction of a new Karad–Kolhapur–Belagavi railway line, which is expected to significantly reduce travel distance between Pune and Bengaluru by avoiding the longer existing route via Miraj.

Call for Infrastructure Upgrades

Participants also expressed concern over the long-pending doubling of the Miraj–Kolhapur track, calling it essential for improving capacity and efficiency.

Broader Connectivity Plans

Discussions also touched upon other projects, including the proposed Kolhapur–Vaibhavwadi rail link and ongoing development works at Kolhapur station, aimed at strengthening regional connectivity.

Former MLA Malojiraje Chhatrapati noted that despite progress in sectors like IT and aviation, railways remain the primary mode of transport for the common people in the region.

The event not only celebrated a historic milestone but also underscored the need for modern rail infrastructure to support economic growth and improve connectivity across western Maharashtra and neighbouring Karnataka.
