Indian Railways is a vertically-integrated organization that produces majority of its locomotives & rolling stock at in-house production units, with a few recent exceptions. The repair and maintenance of this vast fleet of rolling stock is carried out at 44 loco sheds, 212 carriage & wagon repair units and 45 periodic overhaul workshops across various zones of the Railways.
For several decades the Indian Railways have been extending subsidized travel to the citizens of the country as a part of its social responsibility. But while this has been a part of the carrier’s DNA, the Indian Railways has always been redefining its responsibilities towards the society with changing times and social needs.
While patronizing and encouraging sporting activities as a sustainable means of livelihood been the Indian Railways’ social responsibility for many years, the aim to make the largest rail network a Green and environment friendly organization has been high on its recent priority list.
